Making Wooden Spoons With Recycled Wood

Using recycled wood is an excellent choice for making wooden spoons and spring is the optimal time to find it.

Common Recycled Wood Sources:

1) Tree pruning and removal companies (excellent source of green wood)

Advantages:

  • low cost
  • can be milled to desired thickness
  • reduces green wood waste
  • has beautiful grains and patterns

Disadvantages:

  • logs must be hauled and milled
  • planks must be properly stored for an extended drying time (one year fro every inch of thickness)

Note of Caution:  Many spouses are insensitive to this process if lumber is to be stored on your own property for long periods of time.

2) Flooring companies or cabinet shops (scrap wood)

Advantages:

  • wood is dried and ready to use
  • wood is free

Disadvantages:

  • limited in choice of thickness (usually planks will be 5/8″ or less)

If you use a combination of these sources you can have a constant supply of excellent free would for making wooden spoons.
